My parents didn't have a problem with me being vegan last time but I had to buy certain things myself, and being still in college without a job at the moment it's easier to just use the toothpaste that they buy.

I'll definately look into the make-up though since I've already started to look around for more vegan friendly makeup so thanks for the links!
    I completely understand

Awesome. I've talked to many people on the Everyday Minerals forum who live in the UK, I don't believe shipping is that much more. It's the best makeup ever, I swear by it. I've never received so many compliments on my skin before switching. It's light and natural. I was using MAC before and my skin was always broken out, their makeup is too thick.

Oh no! I missed that part. Oops, my mistake.

I went vegan 3 different times in my life and have always come back to lacto-ovo vegetarianism. I am now at a place where I don't think I'll ever CALL myself vegan again although I eat that way most of the time and I go through phases where I'll eat 100% vegan for a stretch. The main reasons that I will go back to eating dairy/eggs are:

    1. Health - I am an avid reader about nutrition (want to become a nutritionist someday) and I'll become inspired by some book that there is something healthy in an animal food that I'm missing out of, like naturally-occurring B-12, or vitamin D in egg yolks, or something like that. When I'm in that phase I will buy only whole foods, and you'll see me buying things like whole milk from a local organic dairy farm and making homemade yogurt with it, or eggs from a different local and organic farm.

    2. Social reasons - I'll feel like I need to be flexible for social reasons...like being invited to someone's house, attending the company holiday party, staying with friends or family, etc. When I'm in this phase I may be eating entirely vegan at home but making exceptions while out.

    3. Economic reasons - I'll buy products that contain small amounts of dairy or eggs just because I can buy them cheaper than the vegan product or in bulk. For example, I bought 2 big tubs of Smart Balance margarine at Costco once because it was WAY cheaper than buying the little tubs of Earth Balance.

I happen to be in a vegan phase right now, but even when I'm not, I'd say the bulk of my diet is vegan. Most of my cookbooks are vegan and I have tons of vegan meals in my cooking repetoire. I think once you've been vegan you never really look at eggs/dairy or cooking the same way, and foods just taste different. I love soy milk and I can't choke down cow's milk nomater what. I like my vegan mac n "cheese" recipe WAY better than any dairy version out there.

I was a strict vegetarian/dietary vegan for health reasons not ethical reasons. I'm not sure what the correct term is.

I went back to lacto-ovo vegetarian for a several reasons.

    1. I'm on a budget, I get food stamps, cows milk is cheaper than Soy milk and I make a lot of smoothies at home. Buying conventional or organic produce at grocery stores or food coops is expensive in general and organic collard greens taste WAY better than conventional.

    2. Having to make sure I get all the necessary vitimins and minerals in my diet became a chore.

    3. Eating out can be difficult unless you don't mind eating chinese food all the time.

Just want to say Indian, Japanese, Thai, and Mexican (to name a few) often have lots of vegan options. You just have to check about lard in Mexican food, ghee in Indian food, and fish stuff in Thai or Japanese. Just a quick, "does this have ___?" can solve that!

Just started a food blog for kicks and giggles: Mmm, que rica

*sigh* See this is the reason I stopped posting here in the first place. The militant crazies. Please do not advocate people falling back into an eating disorder, someone can die from that. How irresponsible of you to say that But anyway, back to the main topic.......

    Vegetarian since 8/03 :)

Animal broth is the # 1 offender (not in Indian food though), I've found. It's in everything. Boo! Agree with your list, those are DEFINITELY common. I hate going to places with language barriers, that's the worst.
